Legendary fighting series Soulcalibur VI returns in 2018

Yesterday at The Game Awards 2017, Bandai Namco revealed Soulcalibur VI. However, it didn't come as a surprise to many. A few days ago, it was rumored that the game would launch as a PlayStation 4 exclusive but that's not the case. Soulcalibur VI coming to Xbox One and PC as well in 2018.

Fans have been waiting for the return of this legendary fighting franchise for a while now, so here's hoping this latest entry doesn't disappoint. From the trailer it definitely seems like a significant evolution for the series but only time will tell. Not only does Soulcalibur VI have to look good — which it does given the trailer — but it also has to further the fighting mechanics. Just like Soulcalibur V, it needs new systems which test your skills.

There's a new fighting system in Soulcalibur VI called "Reversal Edge" that integrates both offense and defense. Once a Reversal Edge is activated, you can continuously defend against the opponent's techniques to clash against each other and follow-up with powerful counterattacks based on the opponent's actions.

It's unclear how much time has passed between Soulcalibur V and Soulcalibur VI. Soulcalibur V continued the epic story of the legendary Soul Swords seventeen years after the events of the prequel. Maybe this time around there will be similar progression of events. However, just like the Tekken franchise, Soulcalibur needs a fresh start. Everything has become so convoluted that sometimes it's hard to follow. According to the publisher, the game takes place in the 16th century, revisiting the events of the original Soulcalibur to uncover hidden truths.

Lastly, Soulcalibur is known for its guest characters. Last time around Ezio Auditore, the Master Assassin from the Assassin's Creed franchise, made an appearance. We wonder who will be part of the game in 2018. If you love fighting games which features weapon-based combat, then definitely be on the lookout for Soulcalibur VI next year. We'll keep you posted as soon as we know more about the project in the coming months.
